Can Wood Pellets from Canada’s Boreal Forest Reduce Net Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Energy Generation in the UK?

چکیده
We present the results of a study on climate forcing effects replacing coal for power generation in United Kingdom (UK) with wood pellets produced northern Ontario, Canada. Continuous pellet production from two biomass sources were considered: fiber increased harvesting standing live trees (stemwood scenario) and harvest residue provided by ongoing operations (residue scenario). In both scenarios, was collected forest management units (FMUs) contrasting treatments: natural decay slash piles Hearst FMU pile burning Kenora FMU. Life cycle emissions associated assessed production, transportation, combustion to replace at hypothetical generating station UK. Greenhouse gas (GHG) removals scenarios using methods: global warming potential (GWP)-based mass balance dynamic life assessment (LCA) approaches. stemwood scenario, change mitigation not achieved within timeline (2020–2100). immediate sourced where current practice is burn piles; FMU, allowed decompose forest, occurred 11.6 3.1 years after collection began, as LCA methods, respectively. Factors affecting studied are discussed.

Optimal crop management can reduce energy use and greenhouse gases emissions in rainfed canola production
Energy use and greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions in rainfed canola production in north eastern Iran were analyzed to find measures to reduce energy use and GHG emissions. Four production scenarios, i.e. a high-input, a low-input, a better crop management and a usual scenario, evaluated. All activities and production processes were monitored and recorded over three consecutive years. The usua...
متن کاملConsumer Incentives to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Personal Automobiles
The focus of this paper is short-term policy options to address greenhouse gas emissions from personal automobiles. Primary policies considered include gasoline taxes, carbon taxes, a carbon cap-andtrade program, cost-shifting initiatives, and a pay-at-thepump auto insurance scheme are examined closely. Pay-at-the-pump auto insurance is recommended on the basis of cost effectiveness, equity, pu...
متن کاملGreenhouse gas emissions from tropical forest degradation: an underestimated source
BACKGROUND The degradation of forests in developing countries, particularly those within tropical and subtropical latitudes, is perceived to be an important contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions. However, the impacts of forest degradation are understudied and poorly understood, largely because international emission reduction programs have focused on deforestation, which is easier to d...
متن کاملCattle ranching intensification in Brazil can reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by sparing land from deforestation.
This study examines whether policies to encourage cattle ranching intensification in Brazil can abate global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by sparing land from deforestation. We use an economic model of global land use to investigate, from 2010 to 2030, the global agricultural outcomes, land use changes, and GHG abatement resulting from two potential Brazilian policies: a tax on cattle from co...
